System and method for continuous play quantification

A system comprising:

• one or more processors;
• and
• a memory storing program code that, when executed by the one or more processors, causes the system to perform operations comprising:
• ingesting a device status feed for a predefined panel of display devices, the device status feed providing, for each display device in the panel, time-indexed power states and active input states indicating whether the display device is tuned to an input connected to a content player device;
• ingesting a content impression feed comprising timestamps and impression-side identifiers associated with a plurality of content impressions for tracked content;
• generating an identity link between content impressions in the content impression feed and display devices in the panel by using at least one of:
• (i) a network address shared between a display device in the panel and a content impression;
• (ii) a hardware address shared between a display device in the panel and a content impression;
• or
• (iii) a third-party identity graph identifier that maps a display device in the panel or a household associated with the display device to an identifier in the content impression feed;
• identifying, for each linked content impression, whether the display device was in a powered-off or low-power state, or not tuned to the input connected to the content player device, at or near the timestamp of the content impression;
• and
• generating a viewership metric for the tracked content that excludes each content impression for which the display device was identified as being in a powered-off or low-power state or not tuned to the input connected to the content player device.

A non-transitory computer-readable medium comprising program code that, when executed by one or more processors, causes the processors to perform operations for accurately determining viewership of tracked content, the operations comprising:

• receiving a device status feed for a predefined panel of display devices, the device status feed providing, for each display device in the panel, at least one of a power status indicating whether the display device is in a powered-on, powered-off, or low-power state, or an active input status indicating whether the display device is tuned to an input connected to a content player device, and a time associated with the at least one of the power status or the active input status;
• receiving a content impression feed including, for each of a plurality of content impressions of the tracked content, a time indicating when the tracked content was played and an impression-side identifier associated with the content impression;
• generating an identity link between at least one content impression in the content impression feed and at least one display device in the panel by using at least one of:
• (i) a network address associated with both the display device and the content impression;
• (ii) a hardware address associated with both the display device and the content impression;
• or
• (iii) a third-party identity graph identifier that maps the display device or a household associated with the display device to an identifier in the content impression feed;
• determining whether the display device associated with the identity link was in a powered-off or low-power state, or not tuned to the input connected to the content player device, at or near the time of the content impression;
• and
• excluding from a viewership metric for the tracked content each content impression for which the display device was determined to be in a powered-off or low-power state or not tuned to the input connected to the content player device.
