Abstract
A display system adjusts picture quality settings to provide an improved and more consistent viewer experience. Different display manufacturers have different default picture quality settings, and a content display device learns the settings of a connected display and adjusts the picture to reduce variation across different displays. A mobile device may be used to capture environmental data (e.g., ambient light), and a content display device adjusts picture quality based on the captured data.

A method comprising:
- receiving environmental data captured by a mobile device, the environmental data describing light within an environment of the mobile device, wherein a display device is within the environment of the mobile device;
- determining a picture quality adjustment setting for display of content on the display device based on the received environmental data;
- receiving content for display on the display device;
- applying the picture quality adjustment setting to the received content to generate adjusted content;
- and
- transmitting the adjusted content for display on the display device.

- instructing a user to position a mobile device in an environment of a display device;
- instructing the mobile device to capture environmental data, the environmental data describing light within the environment of the mobile device;
- determining a picture quality adjustment for display of content on the display device based on the captured environmental data;

- and
- transmitting the adjusted content to the display device for display by the display device.
