Methods and apparatus for generating and using images, e.g. bandlimited images, for use as illumination patterns to support stereoscopic depth determinations are described. In various embodiments bandwidth limited images having different frequency content and/or resolutions are generated using low pass filtering to limit the frequency content of the images. An illumination image is selected, e.g., dynamically, based on a camera to object surface distance and/or a projector to object surface distance taking into consideration the sampling ability of the cameras being used so that the selected illumination image projected onto a surface will be captured without aliasing effects and/or so that it will be of a resolution which facilitates stereoscopic depth determinations, e.g., higher resolution illumination images are selected over lower resolution illumination images when the frequency content of the selected image is within the capture capabilities of the cameras being used to capture the projected pattern without aliasing.
