One or more non-transitory computer-readable media storing instructions that are operable, when executed by one or more processors of a client device, are operable to cause the client device to perform operations comprising:
- associating the client device with a specified user identity, said associated user identity being a first user identity in a group-based communication system to facilitate messaging communication over a network between users of the system;
- generating a group-based communication interface on an associated display of the client device, the group-based communication interface comprising a rectangular window having a height and a width, and the window comprising at least a first pane and second pane displayed in non-overlapping portions of said rectangular window and spanning a majority of the entire height of said rectangular window;
- displaying in said first pane a plurality of user-selectable channel selector controls for a set of channels including unselected channels from which a selection can be made, each of the plurality of channel selector controls identifying a respective one of a plurality of group-based communication channels, each of the group-based communication channels having an associated group of user identities, including the first user identity;
- displaying, in said second pane, in response to user selection of one of said plurality of channel selector controls, a time-ordered list of messaging communications for a first channel identified by said selected channel selector control, an identifier of said channel, and a channel text-entry field that is user-operable to receive text input to generate a messaging communication in said channel, at least some of said messaging communications in said time-ordered list being displayed with one or more indicia identifying a specific user identity as the source of the messaging communication, wherein said messaging communications displayed in said time-ordered list of messaging communications include messaging communications of a general message stream of the first channel;
- displaying, in said time-ordered list of messaging communications displayed in said second pane and visually associated with a first messaging communication in said time-ordered list, a first user-selectable message-specific control, said first messaging communication including one or more indicia showing a user identity as the source of the messaging communication;
- in response to a user selection of the first user-selectable message-specific control, displaying a third pane of the group-based communication interface, simultaneously with said first pane, said second pane and said channel text-entry field, the third pane being displayed in a portion of said rectangular window and spanning a majority of the entire height of said rectangular window and not overlapping with said first pane or said second pane, said third pane displaying content from at least said first messaging communication while said content from said first messaging communication is simultaneously displayed in said second pane, said third pane including a subsidiary thread text-entry field that is different from the channel text-entry field, is displayed simultaneously with said channel text-entry field, and is user operable to receive text input to generate a thread messaging communication;
- while displaying content of said first messaging communication in said second pane and said third pane, receiving in said subsidiary thread text-entry field user input of text of a first thread reply messaging communication;
- after receipt of the text of the first thread reply messaging communication:
- transmitting the first thread reply messaging communication, via said network, to at least one client device associated with a user identity other than the first user identity;
- displaying, in the third pane, at least a portion of a first thread of messaging communications for the first channel, said first thread comprising said first messaging communication as the initial messaging communication of said first thread followed by one or more thread reply messaging communications including said first thread reply messaging communication, wherein displayed messaging communications in said displayed portion of said first thread are displayed with one or more indicia indicating a user identity, the set of said user identities being thread participant identities;
- wherein said initial messaging communication is displayed with one or more indicia showing a user identity as the source of said initial messaging communication;
- and
- wherein said first thread reply messaging communication is displayed with one or more indicia showing said first user identity as the source of said first thread reply messaging communication;
- displaying a user-selectable visibility control that is operable to designate whether content of a messaging communication displayed in the third pane should be displayed as part of the general message stream on one or more other client devices associated with one or more other user identities in the associated group of user identities for the first channel,
- wherein the general message stream (i) includes one or more thread reply messaging communications of one or more threads of the first channel such that the included one or more thread reply messaging communications are displayed in the time-ordered list of messaging communications in the second pane, and (ii) omits one or more thread reply messaging communications of one or more threads of the first channel such that the omitted one or more thread reply messaging communications are not displayed in the time-ordered list of messaging communications in the second pane;
- and
- displaying proximate to the first messaging communication in said time-ordered list of messaging communications displayed in said second pane, a second user-selectable message-specific control, the second user-selectable message-specific control including a visual indication that the first messaging communication is an initial messaging communication of a thread of messaging communications, and being configured to, in response to a user selection of the second user-selectable control, cause at least a portion of the first thread containing the first messaging communication to be displayed in the third pane;
- and
- displaying a user-selectable thread type control that is operable to, in response to user selection of the user-selectable thread type control, cause the client device to update the second pane to display a second list of messaging communications that (i) are all parts of subsidiary communication threads and (ii) include messaging communications from at least two separate channels of the plurality of group-based communication channels.
