Aspects of the present disclosure relate generally to implementing spinal coding, in conjunction with multiple transmissions (such as a multiple incremental redundancy scheme (MIRS)), in a channel-aware fashion. For example, a transmitter may identify, based on channel conditions, channel metrics of a set of subcarriers (or other frequency resources). The transmitter may use these subcarriers to transmit spinal symbols of a spinal encoded transmission. More specifically, an initial transmission of the spinal encoded transmission may include a first set of spinal symbols that are distributed within the spinal encoded transmission. For this first set of spinal symbols, the transmitter may place earlier spinal symbols on subcarriers associated with a higher capacity metric. For the second set of spinal symbols, the transmitter may place later spinal symbols on the subcarriers associated with the higher capacity metric.
