Various example embodiments of a bidirectional optical communication capability may be configured to support bidirectional communications in a passive optical network (PON) between a first set of communication devices and a second set of communication devices connected via an optical distribution network (ODN). The ODN includes a passive optical splitter and an optical core multiplex including a set of optical fiber cores. The ODN is configured to support communications of an optical system, such as a passive optical network (PON) system supporting communications between optical line terminals (OLTs) and optical network units (ONUs), a point-to-point optical communication system, or the like. The optical core multiplex is configured to support optical communications of the optical system in a manner for reducing or eliminating detrimental interaction between the downstream optical signals and the upstream optical signals (e.g., distributed Rayleigh backscattering (DRBS), self-induced and coexistence-induced Raman depletion, or the like).
