Portable electric knockout punch

A portable electric power tool comprising:

• an electric motor;
• a threaded rod configured to be axially moved along a longitudinal axis by the electric motor;
• a movable working member operatively coupled to the threaded rod;
• a movable component axially fixed relative to the threaded rod such that the movable component moves together with the threaded rod along the longitudinal axis;
• a magnet mounted to the movable component;
• a sleeve housing mounted over the movable component, the sleeve housing including a magnet pocket receiving the magnet, wherein the magnet pocket includes a window exposing a portion of the magnet;
• and
• a home position sensor configured to detect the magnet through the window of the sleeve housing when the movable working member is in a home position.

A portable electric power tool comprising:

• a housing;
• an electric motor at least partially within the housing;
• a movable working member operatively coupled to the electric motor and configured to be driven linearly away from a home position by the electric motor;
• a single position sensor fixed relative to the housing, the single position sensor configured to generate a signal indicating the movable working member has reached the home position;
• and
• a controller having a memory, the controller configured to:
• track an active number of motor turns occurring while the electric motor drives the movable working member away from the home position,
• compare a number of reverse motor turns to the active number of motor turns during a reset operation, and decelerate the electric motor from a first reverse speed to a lower, early braking speed when the number of reverse motor turns is within a threshold amount of the active number of motor turns, and
• stop the electric motor and reset the active number of motor turns in the memory to zero to eliminate drift in response to receiving the signal from the single position sensor.
