Abstract
Base station antennas include a cylindrical RF lens and at least one radiating element. The cylindrical RF lenses are hybrid lenses that include both metamaterial focusing elements and dielectric material focusing elements. The RF lenses may comprise a plurality of concentric cylindrical laminae having conductive scattering elements formed thereon and thin dielectric slabs to enhance the performance of the sparsely spaced scattering elements to achieve well defined patterns with low sidelobes and low cross polar discrimination.

A base station antenna comprising:
- a radiating element;
- and
- a cylindrical RF lens that comprises a plurality of concentric cylindrical dielectric shells, wherein each dielectric shell supports a plurality of conductive scattering elements, the conductive scattering elements being arranged in rows and columns, the rows and columns being aligned to extend at angles of 45° and −45° relative to an axis of the cylindrical RF lens.

A base station antenna, comprising:
- a cylindrical RF lens that comprises a set of first laminae, each first laminae extending radially outward from an axis;
- and
- a radiating element that is configured to radiate toward the cylindrical RF lens,
- wherein each first laminae comprises a planar dielectric substrate and a plurality of conductive scattering elements on at least one major surface of the planar dielectric substrate.

A base station antenna, comprising:
- a cylindrical RF lens that has a central axis, the cylindrical RF lens comprising:
- a set of first laminae, each first laminae extending radially outward from the central axis;
- a set of second laminae, each second laminae perpendicular to the central axis;
- and
- a radiating element that is configured to radiate toward the cylindrical RF lens,
- wherein a first number of first laminae in the set of first laminae exceeds a second number of second laminae in the set of second laminae.
