A method of controlling a plasma sheath in a plasma processing system includes applying pulsed plasma power to a plasma‑contacting electrode in contact with a plasma, applying bias power to a substrate exposed to the plasma, measuring time‑varying plasma‑related electrical signals during plasma processing, and adjusting a plasma sheath potential adjacent to the substrate to control an ion energy distribution of the plasma. The plasma sheath potential is adjusted by actively generating or modifying a waveform shape of the pulsed plasma power applied to the plasma‑contacting electrode using a controller executing stored instructions based on the measured time‑varying plasma‑related electrical signals.
