Abstract
System and methods for providing a magnetic field. The methods comprise: supplying AC power to an electromagnetic coil assembly comprising at least one coil and a magnetic core; creating the magnetic field by the electromagnetic coil assembly; and using the magnetic core to increase the magnetic field in the electromagnetic coil assembly. The magnetic core has a variable thickness which increases in areas of relatively higher magnetic flux density and decreases in areas of relatively lower magnetic flux density.
Claims39
A method for providing a magnetic field, comprising:
- supplying AC power to an electromagnetic coil assembly comprising at least one coil and a magnetic core;
- creating the magnetic field by the electromagnetic coil assembly;
- and
- using the magnetic core to increase the magnetic field in the electromagnetic coil assembly, wherein the magnetic core has a variable thickness which increases in areas of relatively higher magnetic flux density and decreases in areas of relatively lower magnetic flux density.
A system, comprising:
- a power source configured to supply alternating current;
- an electromagnetic coil assembly comprising at least one coil configured to create a magnetic field when the alternating current passes therethrough and a magnetic core configured to increase the magnetic coupling;
- wherein the magnetic core has a variable thickness which increases in areas of relatively higher magnetic flux density and decreases in areas of relatively lower magnetic flux density.
A polyphase wireless power transfer system for wirelessly providing high-frequency AC power to an electric vehicle, comprising:
- an off-board transmitter comprising a primary coupler configured to wirelessly transmit the high-frequency AC power, the primary coupler comprising a plurality of primary-side coils backed by a primary-side core;
- and
- an on-board receiver comprising a secondary coupler configured to receive the high-frequency AC power when the primary coupler and the secondary coupler are disposed adjacent to each other and spaced apart by a gap, the secondary coupler comprising a plurality of secondary-side coils backed by a secondary-side core;
- wherein the plurality of secondary-side coils are configured to induce into the secondary-side core a spatially-dependent magnetic flux density distribution that rotates around an axis orthogonal to the plurality of secondary-side magnetic coils;
- and
- wherein the secondary-side core has a variable thickness that varies in a plane orthogonal to the axis like a linear combination of instances of the spatially-dependent magnetic flux density distribution.
A method for providing a cooling system for a structure, comprising:
- cooling the structure using a thermal interface having a variable thickness, wherein the variable thickness increases in areas of relatively higher temperature and decreases in areas of relatively lower temperature.
