Abstract
The present invention provides a reinforced thermoplastic cryostat for a superconductor comprising a thermoplastic conduit and a plurality of reinforced thermoplastic tapes wound around an exterior surface of the thermoplastic conduit in a helical orientation in order to provide a reinforced yet flexible cryostat which meets desired performance and manufacturing requirements in relation to suspended cable applications.
Claims22
A reinforced thermoplastic cryostat for a high temperature superconductor comprising a thermoplastic conduit and a plurality of reinforced thermoplastic tapes wound around an exterior surface of the thermoplastic conduit in a helical orientation to the axial direction and bonded to the exterior surface of the thermoplastic conduit, the combined thermoplastic tapes and cryostat having an axial coefficient of thermal expansion of between +/−15e-6/° C., the reinforced thermoplastic cryostat further comprising at least one load carrying member.

A superconductor cable system for suspended cable applications comprising a reinforced thermoplastic cryostat, said reinforced thermoplastic cryostat comprising a thermoplastic conduit and a plurality of reinforced thermoplastic tapes wound around an exterior surface of the thermoplastic conduit in a helical orientation and at a helix angle of between 20° and 50° to the axial direction;
- a superconductor extending longitudinally of the cryostat;
- a supply of cryogen contained within the cryostat in thermal communication with the superconductor;
- the superconductor cable system comprising at least one load carrying member.
A method of manufacturing a reinforced thermoplastic cryostat for a superconductor cable system comprising the steps of extruding a thermoplastic conduit;
- winding a plurality of reinforced thermoplastic tapes around an exterior surface of the thermoplastic conduit in a helical orientation to the axial direction, bonding the thermoplastic tapes to the thermoplastic conduit such as to provide the cryostat with an axial coefficient of thermal expansion of between +/−15e-6/° C.;
- and providing at least one load carrying member.
