Abstract
An apparatus includes a pixel array and micro lenses disposed above the pixel array. The pixel array includes sensing pixels and dark pixels spread out among the sensing pixels. The dark pixels have a repetitive pattern of a unit tile repeated along rows and columns of the pixel array.

An apparatus, comprising:
- a pixel array, the pixel array comprising:
- a plurality of sensing pixels;
- and
- a plurality of dark pixels spread out among the sensing pixels, wherein the dark pixels have a repetitive pattern of a unit tile repeated along rows and columns of the pixel array;
- and
- a plurality of micro lenses disposed above the pixel array.

- a pixel array comprising:
- a plurality of color pixels;
- and
- a plurality of dark pixels, each of the dark pixels including an opaque film over a photodiode of the respective dark pixel;
- and
- a plurality of micro lenses disposed above the pixel array,
- wherein a first group of the color pixels is located adjacent to a first group of the dark pixels, and wherein the first group of the color pixels and the first group of the dark pixels have a same geometric pattern.

- a plurality of sensing pixels configured to convert incident light reflected from an object above the apparatus to an image of the object;
- a plurality of positioning pixels, wherein the plurality of sensing pixels and the plurality of positioning pixels are blended in the pixel array;

- a plurality of opaque films disposed above the plurality of positioning pixels, such that the plurality of positioning pixels are configured to add dark pixels to the image of the object as positioning codes;
