Systems and methods for determining navigational parameters

A system for navigating a host vehicle, the system comprising:

• at least one processing device comprising circuitry and a memory, wherein the memory includes instructions that when executed by the circuitry cause the at least one processing device to:
• receive at least one image acquired by an image capture device, the at least one image being representative of an environment of the host vehicle;
• analyze the at least one image to identify an object in the environment of the host vehicle;
• determine, based on the analysis of the at least one image, a vertical displacement of the object relative to the host vehicle;
• determine a location of the host vehicle;
• receive map information associated with the determined location of the host vehicle, wherein the map information includes elevation information associated with the environment of the host vehicle, the elevation information including at least an elevation profile for a road extending away from the location of the host vehicle;
• determine, based on the vertical displacement of the object and the elevation profile for the road extending away from the location of the host vehicle, a distance from the host vehicle to the object;
• and
• determine a navigational action for the host vehicle based on the determined distance.

A non-transitory machine-readable medium including instructions, which, when executed by a processing device, cause the processing device to perform operations comprising:

• receiving at least one image acquired by an image capture device, the at least one image being representative of an environment of a host vehicle;
• analyzing the at least one image to identify an object in the environment of the host vehicle;
• determining, based on the analysis of the at least one image, a vertical displacement of the object relative to the host vehicle;
• determining a location of the host vehicle;
• receiving map information associated with the determined location of the host vehicle, wherein the map information includes elevation information associated with the environment of the host vehicle, the elevation information including at least an elevation profile for a road extending away from the location of the host vehicle;
• determining, based on the vertical displacement of the object and the elevation profile for the road extending away from the location of the host vehicle, a distance from the host vehicle to the object;
• and
• determining a navigational action for the host vehicle based on the determined distance.

A method for navigating a host vehicle, the method comprising:

• receiving at least one image acquired by an image capture device, the at least one image being representative of an environment of the host vehicle;
• analyzing the at least one image to identify an object in the environment of the host vehicle;
• determining, based on the analysis of the at least one image, a vertical displacement of the object relative to the host vehicle;
• determining a location of the host vehicle;
• receiving map information associated with the determined location of the host vehicle, wherein the map information includes elevation information associated with the environment of the host vehicle, the elevation information including at least an elevation profile for a road extending away from the location of the host vehicle;
• determining, based on the vertical displacement of the object and the elevation profile for the road extending away from the location of the host vehicle, a distance from the host vehicle to the object;
• and
• determining a navigational action for the host vehicle based on the determined distance.
