Methods and systems for communicating data on an electronic device

A method of determining authenticity of a second component installed in an imaging device, the method comprising:

• sending indirect data from a first component of the imaging device to a second component of the imaging device indicating functionality to be performed by the second component, via a data line communication, wherein sending the indirect data comprises:
• converting, by the first component, the indirect data into a feature of the data line communication by setting a measurable property of the feature of the data line communication, based on the indirect data, and
• causing the data line communication having the feature to occur between the first and second components to thereby send the indirect data to the second component;
• measuring the property of the feature of the data line communication, by the second component, to determine the indirect data;
• performing, by the second component, the functionality indicated by the indirect data to generate a response;
• receiving the response from the second component at the first component;
• and
• determining whether the second component is authentic by using the response and the indirect data to perform an authentication algorithm.
