In a distributed shared-nothing database, data records are partitioned for a join operation prior to being sent to individual computing instances. Each data table of the left relation to be joined is assigned to an equivalence class where members of an equivalence class each rely on partitioning functions that result in the same partitioning of records. Each record of the right relation is mapped to a partition of the equivalence class avoiding duplication where the record belongs to multiple tables of that equivalence class. Records are then grouped by computing instance and sent, as a tuple identifying the record and the equivalence class partition, to each computing instance hosting a table of the equivalence class. At the computing instance, the equivalence class partition is resolved to assign the record to the corresponding partitions of the data tables hosted on that computing instance to thereby permit a join operation.
A method for partitioning a plurality of data records for a join operation on a join key between a left relation and a right relation in a distributed shared-nothing database environment comprising a plurality of computing instances, wherein:
A distributed computing system providing a distributed shared-nothing database environment, comprising:
A computer program product comprising instructions for execution by one or more computing instances of a distributed computing system providing a distributed shared-nothing database environment, in which:
