Peripheral port management in a firmware framework

A method, comprising:

• producing, by an Embedded Controller (EC) of an Information Handling System (IHS), an orchestrator;
• producing, by a plurality of devices coupled to the EC, a plurality of nodes participating with the orchestrator in a firmware framework;
• receiving initial state information for a Universal Serial Bus (USB) port of the IHS;
• in response to detection of an event that potentially affects operation of the USB port of the IHS, collecting telemetry data to determine updated state information for the USB port;
• identifying that the operation of the USB port has been affected, wherein the identification is based on the updated state information and the initial state information;
• and
• in response to the identification, triggering a diagnostic operation based, at least in part, upon a peripheral management policy.

An Embedded Controller (EC) integrated into or coupled to a heterogeneous computing platform of an Information Handling System (IHS), the EC comprising:

• a processing core distinct from any host processor of the heterogeneous computing platform;
• and
• a memory coupled to the processing core, the memory having firmware instructions stored thereon that, upon execution by the processing core, cause the EC to operate as an orchestrator of a firmware framework, the orchestrator configured to:
• receive initial state information for a peripheral port of the IHS;
• in response the IHS detecting an event that potentially affects operation of the peripheral port of the IHS, collect telemetry data to determine updated state information for the peripheral port;
• identify that the operation of the peripheral port has been affected, wherein the identification is based on the updated state information and the initial state information;
• and
• in response to the identification, trigger an operation based, at least in part, upon a peripheral management policy provided by an Information Technology Decision Maker (ITDM) or Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM).
