Abstract
Methods and systems for managing operation of data processing system are disclosed. To manage the data processing system, a management controller of the data processing system may obtain and store a recovery image to a boot partition of a storage device hosted by the data processing system. When an unrecoverable boot failure is identified during a boot of the data processing system, the recovery image may be used during a new boot process initiated by a processor of the hardware resources to place the data processing system in desired operating state.
Claims20
A method of managing operation of a data processing system, the method comprising:
- identifying, by a management controller of the data processing system, an occurrence of an unrecoverable boot failure for the data processing system during a boot of the data processing system;
- based on the identifying:
- obtaining, by the management controller and from a remote entity via an out-of-band communication channel, a recovery image, the recovery image being usable to boot the data processing system into a desired operating state;
- storing, by the management controller and to a boot partition of a storage device hosted by hardware resources via a side band channel, the recovery image;
- initiating, by a processor of the hardware resources and using an in-band channel between the processor and the storage device, a new boot using the recovery image to place the data processing system in the desired operating state;
- and
- providing computer-implemented services while the data processing system is in the desired operating state.
A non-transitory machine-readable medium having instructions stored therein, which when executed by a processor, cause the processor to perform operations for managing operation of a data processing system, the operations comprising:
- identifying, by a management controller of the data processing system, an occurrence of an unrecoverable boot failure for the data processing system during a boot of the data processing system;
- based on the identifying:
- obtaining, by the management controller and from a remote entity via an out-of-band communication channel, a recovery image, the recovery image being usable to boot the data processing system into a desired operating state;
- storing, by the management controller and to a boot partition of a storage device hosted by hardware resources via a side band channel, the recovery image;
- initiating, by a processor of the hardware resources and using an in-band channel between the processor and the storage device, a new boot using the recovery image to place the data processing system in the desired operating state;
- and
- providing computer-implemented services while the data processing system is in the desired operating state.
A data processing system, comprising:
- a processor;
- and
- a memory coupled to the processor to store instructions, which when executed by the processor, cause the processor to perform operations for managing operation of a data processing system, the operations comprising:
- identifying, by a management controller of the data processing system, a startup of hardware resources of the data processing system;
- identifying, by a management controller of the data processing system, an occurrence of an unrecoverable boot failure for the data processing system during a boot of the data processing system;
- based on the identifying:
- obtaining, by the management controller and from a remote entity via an out-of-band communication channel, a recovery image, the recovery image being usable to boot the data processing system into a desired operating state;
- storing, by the management controller and to a boot partition of a storage device hosted by hardware resources via a side band channel, the recovery image;
- initiating, by a processor of the hardware resources and using an in-band channel between the processor and the storage device, a new boot using the recovery image to place the data processing system in the desired operating state;
- and
- providing computer-implemented services while the data processing system is in the desired operating state.
