Abstract

A medium transport device includes an abutting portion on which a leading edge of a transported recording medium abuts, a moving portion to which the abutting portion is attached, that is movable along a transport direction of the recording medium, and that moves to a downstream side in the transport direction at a speed slower than a transport speed of the recording medium in a state where the leading edge of the transported recording medium is abutting on the abutting portion, a retracting portion that retracts the abutting portion on which the leading edge of the recording medium is abutting, from a transport path of the recording medium, a rack gear provided in the moving portion, a pinion gear that meshes with the rack gear, that receives a rotational force transmitted from a motor, and that moves the moving portion provided with the rack gear by rotating, and a biasing portion that biases the moving portion to one side in a moving direction of the moving portion and that maintains a biasing force to be the same regardless of a moving position of the moving portion.
