Lunar coronagraphs are described that produce high-quality images and have a compact design, without requiring refractive elements. One example lunar coronagraph includes a primary mirror and a secondary mirror positioned on an optical axis facing each other. The primary mirror receives moonlight in an on-axis configuration and directs the received moonlight to the secondary mirror. The focal plane of the primary mirror is located between the primary mirror and the secondary mirror, and the primary mirror includes an opening at its center to allow light that is reflected from the secondary mirror to exit. The coronagraph also includes an occulting disk at the focal plane of the primary mirror, and a mask positioned after the occulting disk that blocks or reduces diffraction artifacts associated with the occulting disk. The chronograph additionally includes a baffle between the mask and the primary mirror that reduces or eliminates stray light.
