Adaptive merging migration

A non-transitory computer-readable medium comprising computer-executable instructions stored thereon that, when executed by a processor, cause the processor to perform steps comprising:

• obtaining seismic data regarding a subsurface region of interest, wherein the seismic data comprises a source wavefield and a receiver wavefield;
• obtaining a velocity model regarding the subsurface region of interest;
• forming a reference seismic image based, at least in part, on the seismic data and the velocity model, by extrapolating the receiver wavefield and the source wavefield and using a first imaging condition;
• determining a plurality of local plane-wave receiver wavefields from the receiver wavefield, wherein each local plane-wave receiver wavefield is parameterized by a value of a ray-parameter;
• for each value of the ray-parameter:
• forming a local plane-wave seismic image based, at least in part, on the local plane-wave receiver wavefield corresponding to the ray-parameter and the source wavefield using a second imaging condition,
• determining a spatially-varying weight based, at least in part, on a metric of similarity between the reference seismic image and the local plane-wave seismic image, and
• forming a spatially-weighted local plane-wave seismic image based, at least in part, on the spatially-varying weight and the local plane-wave seismic image;
• forming a merged seismic image based, at least in part, on the spatially-weighted local plane-wave seismic images;
• and
• determining, a drilling target in the subsurface region based on the merged seismic image.

A system, comprising:

• a seismic acquisition system configured to record seismic data regarding a subsurface region of interest;
• and
• a seismic processor configured to receive the seismic data and to:
• obtain seismic data regarding a subsurface region of interest, wherein the seismic data comprises a source wavefield and a receiver wavefield,
• obtain a velocity model regarding the subsurface region of interest,
• form a reference seismic image based, at least in part, on the seismic data and the velocity model, by extrapolating the receiver wavefield and the source wavefield and using a first imaging condition,
• determine a plurality of local plane-wave receiver wavefields from the receiver wavefield, wherein each local plane-wave receiver wavefield is parameterized by a value of a ray-parameter,
• for each value of the ray-parameter:
• form a local plane-wave seismic image based, at least in part, on the local plane-wave receiver wavefield corresponding to the ray-parameter and the source wavefield using a second imaging condition;
• determine a spatially-varying weight based, at least in part, on a metric of similarity between the reference seismic image and the local plane-wave seismic image;
• and
• form a spatially-weighted local plane-wave seismic image based, at least in part, on the spatially-varying weight and the local plane-wave seismic image,
• form a merged seismic image based, at least in part, on the spatially-weighted local plane-wave seismic images, and
• determine, a drilling target in the subsurface region based on the merged seismic image.
