According to one embodiment, a magnetic resonance imaging apparatus includes a gantry apparatus, a supporting portion, a receiver coil, and a moving controller. The supporting portion rotatably supports the gantry apparatus relative to the supporting portion between a first position and a second position, the subject on a couchtop being scanned in a first state where the gantry apparatus is located at the first position before the subject on the couchtop is scanned in a second state where the gantry apparatus is located at the second position. The moving controller, in a case where the subject is scanned in the second state, moves at least one of the couchtop and the receiver coil so that a difference between a position of an examination target portion of the subject in the first state and a position of the examination target portion of the subject in the second state is reduced.
