An electromagnetic flow sensor (3) is described which includes a flow tube (4) extending along a first axis (z) and through which a fluid can flow (5). The sensor (3) also includes first (1) and second (2) electrodes spaced apart along a second axis (x) transverse to the first axis (z) to span a measurement volume (8) within the flow tube (4). The flow sensor also includes a magnetic circuit (14, 56, 65) including a coil (52) and a gap defined between first (12) and second (13) parallel pole faces. The flow tube is received within the gap such that magnetic field about the magnetic circuit is directed across the measurement volume-(8) parallel to a third axis (y) transverse to the first (z) and second (x) axes. The magnetic circuit is shaped to enhance uniformity of magnetic field within at least a central portion (55) of the measurement volume (8).
