Abstract
A device for accurately and precisely installing a primer in an ammunition shell casing is disclosed. The device is comprised of a shell case holder that aligns and supports an ammunition shell casing. In addition, the device includes a primer rod that is supported by a ram throughout its range of motion, as well as a shell support block. The shell support block includes threaded features to accept an adjustment dial. The adjustment dial allows for precise adjustment of the ram and primer rod's travel, thus adjusting the primer's seating depth relative to the base of the ammunition shell casing Additionally, the motion of a priming lever actuates the ram and actuates a primer shuttle to transport primers to the primer rod.
Claims21
A primer installation device comprising:
- A shell casing holder for receiving an ammunition shell casing, wherein the shell casing holder is configured to align the shell casing without supporting the bottom surface of the shell casing and being rigidly mounted to a housing;
- a primer rod having a diameter smaller than or equal to that of the primer, supported by a ram throughout its range of motion, wherein the primer rod is not rigidly fixed to the ram;
- a primary shell support block, supporting the bottom surface of the ammunition shell casing, and with an inner diameter to allow primers to pass through;
- a secondary shell support block, having a stepped surface resting on a shelf in the [a] housing, having a top and bottom surface, the top surface supporting the primary shell support block, being rectangular in shape to prevent rotation, having an inner diameter to align the ram, and the bottom portion being externally threaded to receive an adjustment dial;
- an adjustment dial, having a top and bottom surface, with an inner diameter that is threaded to receive the secondary shell support block, the threads positioning the bottom surface of the dial relative to the top surface of the secondary shell support block;
- the ram, having an inner diameter to align the primer rod, a surface to support the primer rod, an outer diameter to align with the secondary shell support block, and a stepped surface to engage the bottom surface of the adjustment dial, limiting travel of the ram and primer rod;
- a primer shuttle for transporting primers from a primer tube to the primer rod, having a hole with a diameter that is equal to or greater than the diameter of a primer;
- a priming lever that is a part of a linkage system that actuates the ram and primer rod during the lever's down stroke and actuates the primer shuttle to receive a primer during the lever's up stroke.
A primer installation device comprising:
- A shell casing holder for receiving an ammunition shell casing, wherein the shell casing holder is configured to align and support the shell casing and being rigidly mounted to a housing;
- a primer rod having a diameter smaller than or equal to that of the primer, supported by a ram throughout its range of motion, wherein, the primer rod is not rigidly fixed to the ram;
- a shell support block has a top surface that is configured to contact the bottom surface of the ammunition shell casing, contained in the housing, with indexable geometry to prevent rotation, with an inner diameter to allow primers to pass through and align the primer rod;
- an adjustment dial, having a top and bottom surface, positioned below the top surface of the shell support block, limiting the travel of the ram relative to the top surface of the shell support block;
- a ram, having an inner diameter to align the primer rod, a surface to support the primer rod, and an outer diameter to align with the shell support block.
A primer installation device comprising:
- A housing configured to be mounted in a case press, having a pocket with a bottom surface to support the shell support block, and a shelf to support a ram;
- a shell casing holder for receiving an ammunition shell casing, wherein the shell casing holder is configured to align and support the shell casing, and being rigidly mounted to the housing;
- a primer rod having a diameter smaller than or equal to that of the primer, supported by the ram throughout its range of motion, wherein, the primer rod is not rigidly fixed to the ram;
- a shell support block has a top surface that is configured to contact the bottom surface of the ammunition shell casing, contained in the housing, with indexable geometry to prevent rotation, with an inner diameter to allow primers to pass through and align the primer rod;
- an adjustment dial, having a top and bottom surface, positioned below the top surface of the shell support block and above the bottom surface of the housing, limiting the travel of the ram relative to the top surface of the shell support block;
- the ram positioned in line with a ram of a conventional reloading case press, such that the ram of a conventional reloading case press may come into contact with the ram, having an inner diameter to align the primer rod, an outer diameter to align with the shell support block, and a surface to support the primer rod.
A mechanism for transporting primers comprising of:
- A primer shuttle, having a top and bottom surface, the bottom surface resting on a primer shuttle mount, a hole with a diameter that is equal to or greater than the diameter of a small primer, and a hole with a diameter that is equal to or greater than the diameter of a large primer;
- a primer shuttle mount with a surface supporting the bottom surface of a primer shuttle, and a feature for positioning the primer shuttle relative to the primer rod, such that the respectively sized primer hole in the primer shuttle aligns with the size of primer being transported.
