Abstract

An expandable holster for receiving handguns having a variety shapes, sizes, dimensions, and exterior geometries. The holster has a backing. In some embodiments the backing comprises only a second material, in other embodiments the second material is attached to a first material. The holster has a receiving space formed from a third material attached to the backing, the third material being stretchable. The receiving space is capable of expansion and retraction upon the insertion and removal of a handgun. Embodiments of the holster also include inner walls formed from a fourth material which is attached to the third material, the inner walls having a lower flexibility coefficient than the third material. These inner walls offer improved structural integrity and additional safety features wherein a front inner wall blocks access to a safety and/or a trigger of a handgun positioned in the receiving space.

Dependent claims

An expandable holster adapted to receive handguns of different sizes, comprising:

a backing, comprising at least one of:
a first material having a first flexibility coefficient;
and
a second material affixed to the first material, the second material having a second flexibility coefficient;
a third material having a third flexibility coefficient, comprising a substantially rectangular shape, including a pair of first edges and a pair of second edges, wherein the third material is attached to the backing proximate to the first edges, and wherein the attachment of the third material to the backing creates a receiving space therebetween;
and
the receiving space, comprising:
a perimeter having a front wall, a first sidewall, and a second sidewall formed from portions of the third material, and a rear wall formed from at least a portion of the backing;
an interior surface;
an exterior surface;
and
at least one opening allowing for insertion of a portion of a handgun therethrough,
wherein the third flexibility coefficient is higher than the second flexibility coefficient, and
wherein the third material and at least a portion of the receiving space are capable of expansion in at least one direction of at least one plane such that the receiving space is capable of expanding when the handgun is inserted therein and retracting when the handgun is removed.

A method of forming a holster that is expandable to receive handguns of different sizes, comprising:

forming a backing comprising one or more of a first material and a second material, wherein the first material has a first flexibility coefficient and the second material has a second flexibility coefficient, wherein the backing has a front surface that is generally planar;
selecting a third material having a third flexibility coefficient that is higher than the second flexibility coefficient;
cutting the third material into a predetermined shape having at least four edges;
forming a receiving space by attaching the third material to the front surface of the backing to form a receiving volume, wherein the receiving space comprises:
a perimeter comprising a front wall, a first sidewall, and a second sidewall formed from portions of the third material, and a rear wall formed from at least a portion of the front surface of the backing;
an interior surface;
an exterior surface;
and
at least one opening allowing for insertion of a portion of a handgun into the receiving space.
