Heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning system with a thermal energy storage device

A heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) system for use with a refrigerant, the HVAC system comprising:

• a refrigerant circuit comprising:
• a compressor, a condenser, an evaporator, an evaporator bypass flow path, a thermal energy storage device (TESD), and a TESD bypass flow path;
• a TESD expansion device upstream of the TESD and a TESD expansion device bypass flow path;
• an evaporator expansion device upstream of the evaporator and an evaporator expansion device bypass flow path;
• and
• a control system comprising a controller programmed to:
• operate in a charging mode to direct refrigerant through the TESD to charge the TESD, and selectively direct a portion of the refrigerant through the TESD bypass flow path;
• and
• operate in a discharge mode to direct unexpanded refrigerant through the TESD to discharge thermal energy from the TESD to the refrigerant, and selectively direct a portion of the refrigerant through the TESD bypass flow path.

A heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) system for use with a refrigerant, the HVAC system comprising:

• a refrigerant circuit comprising a compressor, a condenser, an evaporator, and a thermal energy storage device (TESD) positioned between the condenser and the evaporator;
• and
• a charging refrigeration circuit separate from the refrigerant circuit and comprising:
• a charging compressor operable to compress a charging refrigerant, a charging condenser, and a charging expansion device;
• and
• a charging refrigerant flow path configured to direct the charging refrigerant through the TESD to charge the TESD with thermal energy;
• and
• a control system comprising a controller programmed to:
• operate the charging refrigeration circuit to charge the TESD with thermal energy;
• and
• operate the refrigerant circuit in a discharge mode to direct refrigerant through the TESD to discharge thermal energy from the TESD to the refrigerant.
