Disclosed is an exhaust flue for a water heater that allows a condensing water heater that is configured for a first category of exhaust venting (for example, category four venting) to be installed with an existing exhaust vent within a building that is configured for a second category of exhaust venting (for example, category one venting). The exhaust flue allows for a non-condensing water heater that was already installed within the building to be replaced with the more efficient condensing water heater while keeping the existing exhaust vent system within the building. Without the use of the exhaust flue as described herein, the entire existing exhaust venting system may need to be replaced with a new exhaust venting system configured for the same category of venting as the new condensing water heater.
