A system to operate a thermostat of a Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system in a low power mode is disclosed. The low power mode comprises a suspend mode and an active mode. During the suspend mode, operations of the thermostat are suspended or postponed. During the active mode, time-sensitive operations of the thermostat are performed. The time-sensitive operations comprise enabling the suspended operations, executing HVAC control software instructions, and monitoring an interrupt signal via a wake-up pin of a processor, where the interrupt signal indicates to exit the thermostat from the low power mode. The system transitions between the suspend mode and the active mode at every predefined threshold interval if no interrupt signal detected.
