Abstract
An embodiment of a downhole tool for launching obturating members within a wellbore includes a first sub extending between an uphole end and a longitudinally opposed downhole end and having a central passage, and a second sub extending between an uphole end and a downhole end and having a central passage in which at least a portion of the first sub is disposed. The downhole tool for launching obturating members within a wellbore further includes an obturating member releasable from the first sub in response to concurrent application of a threshold axially directed force and a threshold fluid pressure to the first sub.
Claims36
A remote launch sub, comprising:
- a first sub extending between an uphole end and a longitudinally opposed downhole end and having a central passage;
- a second sub extending between an uphole end and a downhole end and having a central passage in which at least a portion of the first sub is disposed;
- and
- an obturating member releasable from the first sub in response to a concurrent application of a threshold axially directed force and a threshold fluid pressure to the first sub.
A remote launch sub, comprising:
- a first sub extending between an uphole end and a longitudinally opposed downhole end and comprising a hollow body and a receptacle;
- a second sub extending between an uphole end and a downhole end and having a central passage in which at least a portion of the first sub is disposed;
- and
- an obturating member secured in the receptacle, wherein the obturating member is releasable from the first sub in response to concurrent application of a threshold axially directed force and a threshold fluid pressure to thereby transition a disconnect device coupled to the remote launch sub from a locked state physically locking and restricting relative axial movement to an unlocked state permitting relative axial movement.
A remote launch sub, comprising:
- a first sub extending between an uphole end and a longitudinally opposed downhole end and having a central passage;
- a second sub extending between an uphole end and a downhole end and having a central passage in which at least a portion of the first sub is disposed;
- and
- an obturating member releasable from the first sub in response to application of a threshold axially directed force to the remote launch sub.
A method for launching an obturating member in a wellbore, the method comprising:
- (a) deploying a drillstring comprising a tubular string, a remote launch sub and a BHA into a wellbore;
- wherein the remote launch sub is coupled to the tubular string and the BHA, and wherein the remote launch sub comprises a first sub connected to a second sub and an obturating member;
- (b) concurrently applying a threshold axially directed force along with a threshold fluid pressure to the first sub through the tubular string;
- and
- (c) releasing the obturating member from the remote launch sub.
