Abstract
A trail mat system having a mat extending between and on top of a pair of railroad track rails, the mat including a top surface and a bottom side; a tension member disposed under the mat and configured to engage at least one of the rails; and a fastener operatively associated with the tension member to bias the tension member against the rails to secure the mat to the rails; whereby the mat is configured to be placed over and removably secured to the rails to provide a trail surface overtop the rails without removing the rails or other elements of the railroad track.

A trail mat system for converting existing railroad tracks to trails, comprising:
- a mat extending between and on top of a pair of railroad track rails, the mat including a top surface and a bottom side;
- a tension member carried by the mat and engaging a rail fillet defined between a rail web and a rail head;
- and
- a fastener extending through the mat and engaging the tension member to draw the tension member toward the bottom side of the mat;
- whereby the mat is configured to be placed over and removably secured to the rails to provide a trail surface overtop the rails without removing the rails or other elements of a railroad track.
A trail mat system for converting existing railroad tracks to trails, comprising:
- a mat extending between and on top of a pair of railroad track rails, the mat including a top surface and a bottom side;
- a tension member disposed under a top surface of the mat;
- and,
- a distal end of the tension member biased against a fillet of a rail head on at least one of the rails;
- whereby the mat is configured to be placed over and removably secured to the rails to provide a trail surface overtop the rails without removing the rails or other elements of a railroad track.
