Cathodic protection systems include: a metal surface to be protected; one or more magnesium alloy ribbon anodes disposed on, and electrically connected to, the metal surface, where the metal surface has a higher electrode potential than each anode, and where a length, or a turn of a coil, of each anode is spaced on the metal surface at a periodic distance from any other; and an insulation layer covering the metal surface and the anodes. Cathodic protection methods include: disposing the one or more magnesium alloy ribbon anodes on the metal surface to form the periodic spacing of the length, or the turn of a coil, of each anode from any other; forming one or more electrically conductive contact points between the metal surface and each anode to form the electrical connection therebetween; and disposing the insulation layer on the metal surface to cover the metal surface and the anodes.
