Abstract

A microbial cell for producing at least one lipid with the following general formula II from at least one carbon substrate is provided, wherein R1 and R2 independently of one another comprises identical or different organic radicals each with 5 to 13 carbon atoms, and the cell is a non-pathogenic cell that is genetically modified to increase the heterologous expression relative to the wild-type cell of: Enzyme E1 a 3-(3-hydroxyalkanoyloxy)alkanoic acid (HAA) synthase comprising SEQ ID NO: 1, SEQ ID NO: 7, SEQ ID NO:11, SEQ ID NO: 15 or a variant thereof, wherein the variant comprises 60% sequence identity to SEQ ID NO: 1, 7, 11 or 15; and Enzyme E2 a glycosyltransferase (EC 2.4) comprising SEQ ID NO: 2, SEQ ID NO: 8, or SEQ ID NO: 12, or a variant thereof, wherein the variant comprises 60% sequence identity to SEQ ID NO: 2, 8 or 12.
