A wood thermal treatment apparatus has a cell having a thermal treatment chamber housing a wood mass, an air circulation jacket adjacent to and fluidly isolated from the thermal treatment chamber by a thermally conductive partition wall and having an inlet collector and an outlet collector. A system for heating and cooling the thermal treatment taking chamber, a heating operating configuration and a cooling operating configuration, has a recirculation duct which in the heating operating configuration is connected between the inlet and outlet collectors so that an airflow introduced into and extracted from the air circulation jacket passes in the recirculation duct. In the heating operating configuration, the recirculation duct and the air circulation jacket form a closed circuit. A heating unit heats air flowing in the recirculation duct by combustion of wood waste resulting from wood processing. Flow diverter valves open the closed circuit in the cooling operating configuration.
