The present invention relates to aqueous polymer dispersions of polymers P which are obtainable by aqueous emulsion polymerization of ethylenically unsaturated monomers M and at least one chain transfer compound C, where the monomers M comprise at least one monoethylenically unsaturated monomer M1 and at least one multiethylenically unsaturated monomer M2, where the polymer P comprises a multitude of hydrolytically cleavable functional groups CFG within its carbon chain formed by the polymerization of the ethylenically unsaturated double bonds of the monomers M such that the functional groups CFG interrupt the carbon chain of the polymer P, where the relative amount of the functional groups CFG is in the range of 0.1 to 20 mol·kg−1, in particular in the range of 0.2 to 10 mol·kg−1 and especially in the range of 0.3 to 8 mol·kg−1 or 0.5 to 6 mol·kg−1 of the polymer P. The present invention relates to a method for producing an aqueous polymer dispersion as described herein, which comprises an aqueous emulsion polymerization, in particular a free radical aqeuous emulsion polymerization, of the monomers M and the chain transfer compound, where the amount of the chain transfer compound C and the type and amount of monomers M2 is chosen such that the resulting polymer contains hydrolytically cleavable functional groups CFG which interrupt the carbon chain of the polymer provided, where the relative amount of the functional groups CFG is in the range of 0.1 to 20 mol·kg−1, in particular in the range of 0.2 to 10 mol·kg−1 and especially in the range of 0.3 to 8 mol·kg−1 or 0.5 to 6 mol·kg−1 of the polymer P.
