Provided are: a nucleic acid including a nucleic acid sequence encoding a chimeric protein including at least part of an ion-transporting receptor rhodopsin and at least part of a G protein-coupled receptor rhodopsin and a nucleic acid sequence encoding a signal sequence; and a nucleic acid including a nucleic acid sequence encoding a chimeric protein including at least part of an ion channeling receptor rhodopsin and at least part of a G protein-coupled receptor rhodopsin; and a nucleic acid construct including the nucleic acid sequences. The use of the nucleic acids or nucleic acid constructs prevents and suppresses the progress of retinal diseases, and enhances the visual cognitive behavioral function and visual function.

A method for treating or preventing a retinal disease in a subject, comprising the step of administering to said subject an effective amount of a nucleic acid molecule comprising a nucleic acid sequence, wherein the nucleic acid sequence encodes a chimeric protein comprising an amino acid sequence of an ion transport receptor rhodopsin derived from a microorganism of the Gloeobacter genus and an amino acid sequence of a bovine or human derived G protein-coupled receptor rhodopsin, wherein the chimeric protein comprises an amino acid sequence wherein at least a portion of at least one of a second loop on the cytoplasm side and a third loop on the cytoplasm side of the amino acid sequence of the microorganism derived ion transport receptor rhodopsin is substituted with an amino acid sequence of at least a portion of at least one of a second loop on the cytoplasm side and a third loop on the cytoplasm side of the G protein-coupled receptor rhodopsin, and wherein the nucleic acid sequence encodes the amino acid sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO:
A method for treating or preventing a retinal disease in a subject in need therefor or at risk, comprising the step of administering to said subject an effective amount of a chimeric protein comprising an amino acid sequence of an ion transport receptor rhodopsin derived from a microorganism of the Gloeobacter genus and an amino acid sequence of a bovine or human derived G protein-coupled receptor rhodopsin, wherein the chimeric protein has an amino acid sequence of wherein at least a portion of at least one of a second loop on the cytoplasm side and a third loop on the cytoplasm side of the amino acid sequence of the microorganism derived ion transport receptor rhodopsin is substituted with an amino acid sequence of at least a portion of at least one of a second loop on the cytoplasm side and a third loop on the cytoplasm side of the G protein-coupled receptor rhodopsin, wherein the amino acid sequence is the sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO:
