A method is provided for preparing a ceramic matrix composite (CMC) component having at least one surface with augmentation features to enhance heat transfer. In one process embodiment, an initial CMC preform is formed by laying up/stacking a plurality of ceramic fiber plies with a binder to form an initial preform. Thereafter, one or more plies of ceramic fiber infiltrated with ceramic particles and binder are applied to a surface of the initial preform to form a final preform. The ceramic particles create a roughened surface and the particles at the roughened surface form with augmentation features that can enhance heat transfer. The binder can then be removed and the final preform can be subjected to densification to create a ceramic matrix around the ceramic fiber tows and form the CMC component.
