The present disclosure advantageously refers to a process for treating produced water to make suitable for a flooding or other application. The process comprises deoiling a produced water to form a substantially deoiled produced water. The deoiled produced water may be passed through a microfiltration membrane comprising an ion-exchange functionality. In this manner water may be treated to, for example, comprise a total dissolved solids content of less than about 30,000 ppm or less and a hardness of, for example, less than about 400 ppm. The processes may be readily modified to treat water to one or more desired characteristics which are flexible, efficient, cost-effective, and/or be sufficiently modifiable to fit for purpose a water treatment.
