A method of making hybrid carbon nanotube bundles. The method uses a pH neutral solvent bath followed by drying. This PH neutral solvent avoids the use of acids, superacids and caustics. The solvent preferably has a Hamett acidity function greater ranging from −12. The solvent may be aromatic hydrocarbons or halogenated solvents. The solvent preferably has a Hansen solubility parameter of 2 to 10, minimizing damage to common fullerene crystals. Embedding the fullerene crystals in the nanotubes provides improved electrical and optical properties. The presence of these fullerene crystals can modify the motion of electrons, turning standard nanotubes into components for nanoscale transistors, rectifiers, and memory devices.
