Disclosed is an applicator unit, a tire building device and a method for applying a continuous strip to a drum, wherein the applicator unit has an applicator roll with a roller body that is rotatable about a roll axis and that defines a retaining surface extending in a circumferential direction about the roll axis, wherein the applicator unit further has a retaining member for retaining the continuous strip in a retaining position on the retaining surface, wherein the retaining member is arranged for following the continuous strip in the retaining position on the retaining surface along a retaining arc of at least ten degrees about the roll axis as the roller body rotates about said roll axis.
