System and method for latch engagement detection

A computer-implemented method for latch engagement detection, comprising:

• passing a kingpin of a trailer through a passage of a latch unit configured to be located on a vehicle, the latch unit including the passage leading to an interior section configured to receive the kingpin of the trailer, wherein the latch unit includes a locking jaw configured to be positioned into an open position or a closed position, wherein in the open position the passage leading to the interior section of the latch unit is unobstructed for passage of the kingpin into and out of the interior section, and wherein in the closed position the passage leading to the interior section of the latch unit is blocked to prevent passage of the kingpin out of the interior section;
• and
• executing instructions stored in a memory with a processing device in communication with at least one sensor configured to be located on the vehicle to perform operations comprising:
• detecting with the at least one sensor at least one of (i) movement of the kingpin of the trailer through the passage and into the interior section of the latch unit, or (ii) movement of the locking jaw into the closed position.
