Abstract
A technique of monitoring the condition of a vehicle occupant is presented. The technique monitors a combination of characteristics of a vehicle occupant's eyes, and associated illumination conditions, to determine the occupant's condition, and causes a vehicle function to be performed based on the determined condition.

A monitoring system comprising:
- a camera system configured to:
- determine illumination conditions of an interior of a vehicle, and
- obtain a set of characteristics of eyes of an occupant of the vehicle;
- and
- an interpretation module configured to:
- determine a condition of the occupant based on the set of characteristics and the illumination conditions, and
- cause a vehicle function to be performed based on the condition of the occupant.

- determining illumination conditions of an interior of a vehicle;
- obtaining a set of characteristics of eyes of an occupant of the vehicle;
- determining a condition of the occupant based on the set of characteristics and the illumination conditions;
