Automatic identification of a tire mounting position on a vehicle

A system for automatic detection of the mounting position of a tire on a vehicle equipped with two or more tires, the system comprising:

• a memory configured to store a set of reference RSSI code and reference load value pairs, wherein each reference RSSI code in said set of reference pairs is associated to a known tire mounting position on the vehicle and wherein each reference load value in said set of reference pairs is associated to a known load measurement associated to said known mounting position;
• a tire mounted sensor attached to the tire and configured to transmit, during at least one rotation of the tire, one or more signals at each of a plurality of predetermined angular positions and a current measurement of the estimated load of the vehicle;
• a receiving unit configured to receive the one or more transmitted signals and estimated load measurement;
• a processing unit configured to process the received one or more signals and load measurement by:
• measuring the relative signal strength indicator (RSSI) value of each of the one or more signals transmitted at each of the plurality of predetermined angular positions;
• associating, based on the measured RSSI values, a derived angular RSSI value to each of the plurality of predetermined angular positions;
• grouping the derived angular RSSI values into a group of angular RSSI values forming an RSSI code related to the tire;
• associating the RSSI code related to the tire with the estimated load measurement received by the tire as to form a RSSI code and load value pair related to the tire;
• retrieving the set of reference RSSI code and reference load value pairs;
• evaluating the difference of the RSSI code and load value pair related to the tire with respect to each pair in the set of reference RSSI code and reference load value pairs;
• and
• a determination unit configured to determine the mounting position of the tire on the vehicle based on the evaluated difference between the RSSI code and load value pair and each pair in the set of reference RSSI code and reference load value pairs.
