An example system for automating treatment of a working surface of a substrate can include a robotic arm and end of arm tooling operable with at least one surface treatment tool operable to remove material from the working surface. A first sensor can be operable to measure a force associated with the end of arm tooling as engaged with the working surface. A second sensor can be operable to directly measure a property of the working surface. A control module can be operable to detect the presence of the working surface, operate the end of arm tooling about the working surface as part of a surface treatment event comprising removing material from the working surface, determine a change in a working surface characteristic, and facilitate adjustment of operation of the end of arm tooling or robotic arm in response to the change in the working surface characteristic.
