Position-based auto-stop feature for a power tool

A method of controlling a motor in a power tool, the method comprising:

• determining, with an electronic processor of the power tool, an angular velocity of a housing of the power tool about a rotational axis of the motor based on a power tool characteristic monitored by a sensor of the power tool;
• comparing, with the electronic processor, the angular velocity to a velocity threshold;
• adding, with the electronic processor, a value of the angular velocity to an integrator in response to the angular velocity exceeding the velocity threshold;
• determining, based on a value of the integrator exceeding an auto-stop trip threshold, that a loss of control event is occurring;
• and
• in response to determining that the loss of control event is occurring, controlling, with the electronic processor, a switching network of the power tool to cease driving of the motor.

A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing instructions that, when executed by an electronic processor of a power tool, perform a set of functions, the set of functions comprising:

• determining an angular velocity of a housing of the power tool about a rotational axis based on a power tool characteristic monitored by a sensor of the power tool;
• comparing the angular velocity to a velocity threshold;
• in response to the angular velocity exceeding the velocity threshold, adding a value of the angular velocity to an integrator;
• determining, based on a value of the integrator exceeding an auto-stop trip threshold, that a loss of control event is occurring;
• and
• controlling, in response to determining that the loss of control event is occurring, a switching network of the power tool to cease driving a motor of the power tool.
