A mesoporous boron-based composite material for selective germanium removal from aqueous solutions is provided. The mesoporous boron-based composite material comprises a boron-containing matrix derived from boric acid, a nitrogen-containing component derived from melamine incorporated into the boron-containing matrix, and a metal dopant comprising tin dispersed within the boron-containing matrix. The composite material exhibits selective adsorption of germanium over gallium from acidic aqueous solutions. The composite material may be calcined at a temperature ranging from 500° C. to 600° C. under a nitrogen environment. The tin may be derived from stannous chloride. The composite material may further comprise a surfactant template derived from a triblock copolymer such as Pluronic-123. The composite material exhibits a germanium uptake capacity of at least 1.0 mg Ge per gram of composite material from a 0.05 M hydrochloric acid solution while exhibiting substantially no gallium uptake.
