Abstract
Methods related generally to the removal of atmospheric pollutants from the gas phase are provided. The methods involve contacting a first stream comprising NO and/or NO2 with a second stream comprising (ClO2)0 to provide a third stream comprising NO and NO2 at a molar ratio of about 1:1; and contacting the third stream with a fourth stream comprising an aqueous metal hydroxide (MOH) solution to convert NO and NO2 to MNO2.

1-3. (canceled)
An apparatus for treating a gas stream comprising:
- a reactor having a gas stream inlet for introducing the gas stream into the reactor, and an oxidant inlet for introducing an oxidant into the reactor;
- and
- an oxidant generator outside of the reactor that produces ClO2 and that is connected in flow communication with the reactor oxidant inlet;
- wherein the gas stream and oxidant mix inside the reactor to cause a component in the gas stream to react to produce a different component, compound, molecule, or atom.
A method for treating gas in the gas stream using the apparatus of claim 1 comprising:
- introducing the gas stream into the reactor;
- introducing the oxidant in the reactor downstream from where the gas stream enters the reactor;
- inducing the turbulent flow state inside of the reactor causing the gas stream and oxidant to me mixed together while passing through the reactor;
- and
- after being mixed together, causing the at least one component in the gas stream to react to produce the different component, compound, molecule, or atom while still inside of the reactor.
An apparatus for treating a gas stream comprising at least one of NOx and SOx gases comprising:
- a reactor having a gas stream inlet for introducing the gas stream into the reactor, and an oxidant inlet located downstream of the gas stream inlet for introducing an oxidant into the reactor, wherein the reactor is configured to induce a turbulent flow state within the reactor;
- an oxidant generator outside of the reactor that produces ClO2 and that is connected in flow communication with the reactor oxidant inlet, wherein the ClO2 is in a gas, mist, or liquid state;
- a sensor connected with the reactor that is configured to monitor one or more chemicals in the reactor;
- and
- a controller that is configured to adjust at least one of the amount of gas stream or oxidant provided to the reactor or the amount of oxidant produced by the oxidant generator;
- wherein the gas stream and oxidant mix inside the reactor to cause a component in the gas stream to react to produce a different component, compound, molecule, or atom.
A method for treating a gas stream comprising Nox and/or Sox gases comprising the steps of:
- introducing the gas stream into a reactor using a gas stream inlet;
- introducing an oxidant into the reactor using an oxidant inlet;
- operating an oxidant generator to produce the oxidant, wherein the oxidant generator is in flow communication with the reactor oxidant inlet;
- causing one or both of the gas stream and the oxidant to be in a turbulent flow state as the gas stream and/or oxidant passes within reactor;
- and
- causing the gas stream and oxidant to be mixed together in the turbulent flow state, wherein mixing together of gas stream and oxidant cause a component in the gas stream to react to produce a different component, compound, molecule, or atom.
