Abstract
Treatment of damaged, diseased, abnormal, obstructive, cancerous or undesired tissue (e.g. a tumor, a benign tumor, a malignant tumor, a cyst, or an area of diseased tissue, etc) is provided by delivering specialized pulsed electric field energy to target tissue areas in specific doses so as to obtain a superior outcome. The specialized PEF energy and delivery has been optimized to provide advanced treatment of target tissue areas, including destruction of undesired tissue and generation of improved inflammatory and immune responses. The specialized PEF energy provides superior outcomes to, for example, radiofrequency ablation and irreversible electroporation.
Claims20
A method of treating a patient having a tumor, comprising:
- positioning an electrode so as to deliver pulsed electric field energy to at least a portion of the tumor, wherein the electrode is electrically connected to a generator that produces the pulsed electric field energy having a waveform comprising packets of biphasic pulses;
- and
- delivering the pulsed electric field energy to the at least a portion of the tumor causing non-thermal cell death at least within the at least a portion of the tumor which induces an immune response characterized by
- (i) an increase in circulating plasmablasts at a first timepoint following the delivering, and
- (ii) an increase in circulating plasma cells at a second timepoint following the first timepoint, wherein the increase in circulating plasma cells is associated with production of antibodies that specifically bind to tumor-associated antigens expressed by the tumor.
A method of inducing an anti-tumor immune response in a patient comprising:
- applying pulsed electric field energy to a tumor, wherein the pulsed electric field energy comprises packets of biphasic pulses which generates a temporally ordered immune response comprising
- (i) activation of T lymphocytes within approximately 5 days of applying the pulsed electric field energy to the tumor,
- (ii) expansion of plasmablast populations after activation of T lymphocytes, and
- (iii) expansion of plasma cell populations after expansion of plasmablast populations.
A method of treating a tumor in a patient comprising:
- administering pulsed electric field energy to the tumor, wherein the pulsed electric field energy comprises packets of biphasic pulses;
- identifying a time window after administering the pulsed electric field energy wherein plasmablasts or plasma cells are elevated;
- and
- administering an additional therapy during the time window.
