Yankauer Suction Device with Auxiliary Access Port

A suction catheter, comprising:

• a suction tube extending from a proximal end of the suction catheter to a distal end of the suction catheter, the suction tube comprising a lumen extending from the proximal end to the distal end;
• and
• an auxiliary access port located on the suction catheter between the proximal end and the distal end of the suction tube, the auxiliary access port comprising an opening and a hollow bore in fluid communication between the opening and the lumen of the suction tube,
• wherein the auxiliary access port is sized to receive a bougie instrument comprising an elongate shaft and an angled distal end through the opening and hollow bore and into the lumen while the distal end of the suction catheter is placed near a vocal cord of a patient, and
• wherein a distal opening of the lumen is sized to receive the bougie instrument extended through the hollow bore, through the lumen, and beyond the distal end of the suction catheter and past the vocal cord to facilitate guidance of an endotracheal tube into a trachea of the patient, the angled distal end of the bougie instrument configured to provide tactile feedback as the bougie instrument moves across tracheal rings of the patient.

An airway management system, comprising:

• a suction catheter comprising:
• a handle at a proximal end of the suction catheter;
• a suction tube extending distally from the handle and comprising a lumen extending from the proximal end to the distal end and a radius of curvature between the proximal end and the distal end configured to navigate an oropharyngeal cavity of a patient;
• and
• an access port integrated with the handle and comprising an opening, a hollow bore in fluid communication between the opening and the lumen of the suction tube, and a seal configured to selectively seal the hollow bore from an exterior environment while maintaining negative pressure through the lumen;
• and
• a bougie instrument comprising an elongate shaft and an angled distal end, the bougie instrument configured to be received through the opening of the access port upon breaching the seal and advanced through the hollow bore and the lumen until the angled distal end extends beyond the distal end of the suction tube and past a vocal cord of the patient,
• wherein the angled distal end is configured to provide tactile feedback as the bougie instrument moves across tracheal rings of the patient to facilitate guidance of an endotracheal tube into a trachea of the patient.
