Abstract
Characterizing interactions between hosts and microbes in individual animals includes exposing a population of animals in a first environment to a first microbe for a first period. The first microbe is modified to express a fluorescent protein. Fluorescent images are captured of the individual animals within the population at multiple points in time. The background of the captured fluorescent images is removed. The remaining portions of the images, considered infected portions, are analyzed. Analysis of the infected portions includes identifying the infected area, quantifying the infected area and integrating a fluorescent intensity of the infected area.
Claims21
A method, comprising:
- exposing a population of animals in a first environment to a first microbe for a first period, wherein the first microbe is modified to express a fluorescent protein;
- capturing, after exposing the population of animals to the first microbe, fluorescent images of the individual animals within the population at multiple points in time;
- and
- analyzing the fluorescent images.
A non-transitory computer-readable medium comprising instructions that, when executed by a processor, implement:
- exposing a population of animals in a first environment to a first microbe for a first period, wherein the first microbe is modified to express a fluorescent protein;
- capturing, after exposing the population of animals to the first microbe, fluorescent images of the individual animals within the population at multiple points in time;
- and
- analyzing the fluorescent images.
