Inhibiting radical formation or quenching of radicals may aid in limiting damage to bodily structures resulting from exposure to these reactive species. Surprisingly, hydroxycinnamic acids, such as ferulic acid, may enhance the performance of polyphenols in inhibiting radical formation or quenching of radicals. Hydroxychromanes, such as copherol, may further improve the inhibition or quenching of radicals when combined with polyphenols and hydroxycinnamic acids. Cosmetic compositions having radical-mitigating properties may comprise at least one polyphenol, at least one hydroxychromane bearing at least one methyl group, and at least one hydroxycinnamic acid. The at least one polyphenol, the at least one hydroxychromane, and the at least one hydroxycinnamic acid may be present at or above a minimum concentration at which the synergistic interaction is first observable.
