Abstract
A surgical system is disclosed that includes a surgical instrument and a controller in operable communication with the surgical instrument. The surgical instrument includes an end effector that includes a first clamp arm, a second clamp arm movable relative to the first clamp arm from an open configuration to a closed configuration to engage a vessel therebetween, and an electrode. The controller is operable to apply, with the electrode, energy to the vessel, estimate a time of media fracture of the vessel, measure an amount of the energy applied to the vessel after the estimated time, and estimate a quality of a seal applied to the vessel based on the measured amount of the energy.
Claims22
A surgical system, comprising:
- a surgical instrument comprising an end effector that includes:
- a first clamp arm;
- a second clamp arm movable relative to the first clamp arm from an open configuration to a closed configuration to engage a vessel therebetween;
- and
- an electrode;
- and
- a controller in operable communication with the surgical instrument, wherein the controller is operable to:
- apply, with the electrode, energy to the vessel;
- estimate a time of media fracture of the vessel;
- measure an amount of the energy applied to the vessel after the estimated time;
- and
- estimate a quality of a seal applied to the vessel based on the measured amount of the energy.
A surgical system, comprising:
- a surgical instrument comprising an end effector that includes:
- a first clamp arm;
- a second clamp arm movable relative to the first clamp arm between an open configuration and a closed configuration to capture a vessel therebetween;
- and
- an electrode;
- a sensor to sense a position of the second clamp arm relative to the first clamp arm;
- and
- a controller in operable communication with the surgical instrument and the sensor, wherein the controller is operable to:
- apply, with the electrode, energy to the vessel;
- monitor, with the sensor, a rate of motion and a position of the second clamp arm;
- and
- estimate a time of media fracture of the vessel based on:
- a comparison of the rate of motion to a rate of motion threshold;
- and
- detecting, or failing to detect, the second clamp arm reaching a threshold position.
The surgical system of clamp 11, wherein the controller is further operable to:
- measure an amount of the energy applied to the vessel after the estimated time;
- and
- estimate a quality of a seal applied to the vessel based on the measured amount of the energy.
A surgical system, comprising:
- a surgical instrument comprising an end effector that includes:
- a first clamp arm;
- a second clamp arm movable relative to the first clamp arm between an open configuration and a closed configuration to capture a vessel therebetween;
- and
- an electrode;
- a sensor to sense a position of the second clamp arm relative to the first clamp arm;
- and
- a controller in operable communication with the surgical instrument and the sensor, wherein the controller is operable to:
- apply, with the electrode, energy to the vessel;
- monitor, with the sensor, a rate of motion and a position of the second clamp arm;
- and
- estimate a quality of a seal applied to the vessel based on the rate of motion and the position.
